After further sanding it looks like BCS102. How does this serial# correspond to a build date? The numbers should be in the four or five-hundreds by this point?

My Aircraft kit was purchased in 1993, and my serial number is CCU004, if that helps you.

Someone who really knows what they're talking about will chime in I hope, but my understanding is that the first 3 letters denote the year and date of the build, and the 3 numbers are the number of kits that had been built that year up to that point. Sorry, I don't know exactly what year, etc. the letters stand for.

The serial number of my 1993 IV-1200 was CCU008. This converts to the third month of the third year after 1990 - the U is for the standard Model IV-1200 vs. the Speedster which would have a S in the U position. The 008 is the eighth kit shipped that month. This was the initial new numbering system Skystar inititiated after the acquisition. I did receive the kit in March of 1993. I have also spoken to other early Skystar customers and their delivery dates are consistent with their serial numbers.
So my kit is a Speedster from February of 1993 and was the 102nd kit sold that month? Wow, busy times back then! Thanks for the education Lowell.

most of the SNs are found on the seatbelt attachment welded to the airframe. Usually one of the top attachments, sometimes burried under paint. Im not familiar with any other locations but I suppose it's possible.

Yep. Thanks. Found!!! Super old buried under layers of paint.
Serial #1573.
I just looked at the Motor freight paperwork, the shipping date of my Classic IV was December 18 1996.
A couple of weeks earlier I visited Skystar in Nampa. They gave me a flight in one of their demo planes and they provided a tour of the factory and saw them welding the fuselage for my order. That was cool.
The serial number is C 96120180
