Decided to see how the big tires do in soft sand....little more rolling resistance, but not bad.

I have been eyeing a landing spot for quite awhile. Its on the back side of the Sand Dunes if you are familiar with Little Sierra Sand Dunes. I flew over a rock cropping and there was a hawks nest at the top that I wanted to go and check out. Cory came with me and I decided to give it a try. It was defiantly the roughest landing spot I have landed. Caught air multiple times on landing. Took me a while to get out of there walking off the best place to takeoff. Probably wont be going back anytime soon. Lots of rollers and mounds that where hidden by the weeds.

    Two top-ends, in two days!
Our oil analysis continues to show high aluminum count. We think we have the solution. Stay tuned!

I had saw where Terry Johnstone sent his back in for new pistons and crankshaft. He said his has not been flown.

Yes.....the CP pistons are not wearing correctly. I removed my CP pistons and spent forever measuring them trying to figure out where the high AL count in my oil analysis is coming form. Well I found it! The oil scraper top ring has been wearing into the piston ring land on one of the pistons. Comparing the 915 piston to the CP piston and I can see a huge upgrade. Thank you Thomas from Edge Performance for figuring this one out. Sounds like all new 912STI's will come with 915 pistons. Thanks Rotax for the engineering on the 915 pistons! I have got 5 hours on the new pistons and changed out the breakin oil to sport 4. Leakdown before I even started it was 80/80 and it is making more power. About 50-75 rpms.

That's good to have found the problem before it was a big problem.
As someone who takes oil samples on several machines here on the farm, I was always concerned at the amount of aluminum you were getting out of the oil filters.
Thanks for posting all the info on the engines that you have.

915 piston update: Well....kinda of. I have been traveling lots for work and unable to fly as much as I thought I would be able. I have about 10 hours since the 915 piston install. They seem to make more power than the CP pistons. Better rings with less blow-by makes more power and burns less oil. They are making about 50rpm increase on WOT power. Ring defiantly seal better. As soon as I get about 5 more hours on them I will send in and oil sample which should tell if they are the way to go for Edge built engines. Couple pictures of the recent flying. Made it out early morning to the desert, and then down to cherry creek. Always fun landing off airport!

915 piston update: We have been chasing this one for awhile, but finally have a clean oil sample! Slightly higher than average, but I can attribute that to residual oil, and still breaking in somewhat. 915 piston where designed for boost and the rings are almost twice as thick as the CP piston. No oil burn, and the same if not more power. (Even though the piston is heavier) Glad to finally have this figured out.
