    Default Engine oil

What oil is everyone using in their Rotax engines, and why?

    Thanks,

    Steve

Aero Shell Sport Plus 4. Made for the Rotax/gearbox.

Before Aero Shell Sport Plus 4 appeared on the market I used Honda Pro oil available at any Honda motorcycle shop. Worked well for many hundreds of hours.

Mobil 1. But I'm switching to Mobil 1 Racing 4T which is a motorcycle racing oil with more wear additives for the gear box. Larry pointed me in that direction.

Is there different levels of wear additive ?
The reason I ask is ,I was warned not to use additives an account of the sprag clutch
I am using ELF oil, as it is supposedly better for lead scavenging

Typically for wet clutches you don’t want anti friction additives but with the Rotax clutch it’s not like a motor cycle here the plates are opening and closing. Either way, 4T is a motorcycle oil so it accounts for wet clutches. The racing has more anti wear additives for the gear box etc. You can use the racing oil on a vehicle with a catalytic converter. But planes, you’re good.

Aero Shell Sport Plus 4. Like Steve said, it’s designed specifically for the Rotax, and I’ve had excellent experience with Aero Shell oil in the past.

As Josh said, I run the Mobil 1 Racing 4T, 10W-40. I have since I got my first 912 years ago. I am fortunate in that I can get uncontaminated auto gas in my area, which is what I run.

If you run 100LL more than on a rare occasion, you should run the Sport +4 or another mineral motorcycle oil. Full synthetics and lead don't live well together and will leave lead deposits in the crank case and gear box, even with the use of Decalin.

I'm using Aero Shell Sport Plus 4 as that is what is recommended in my Rotax manual and my 912iS was shipped with 4 or 5 quarts in the crate.
