Beautiful! There are many in this world who have never seen truly dark skies. Being an astronomy "buff", it's something I care about. Thanks Dave!

I live in a small desert community in central Washington: the middle of nowhere. Yet, even here where the bogey man count is low, the fear factor is high. The night sky is washed out by mercury vapor lights and such. That photo is beautiful! Nice to know there are still places to observe the night sky as it was meant to be seen: unobstructed from horizon to horizon!
Great photo! A rare sight on dry land. My experience seeing the the night sky in its full glory was at sea in a small boat, hundreds of miles from land.

Same here Tom. Broad reaching far offshore, billions and billions of stars, phosphorescent in the wake, and the only artificial light the tri-color at the top of the mast. Then the moon rises and paints a silver path across the water. Wife, young daughter and I were the only crew so there were hours of solo time for introspection over a cup of hot tea.

Interesting how many yachties there are on this site. We too are ex yachties and that was my immediate reaction. We remember the nites in the middle of the ocean when the sky was amazing. I have also been lucky enough to spend 14mths in Antarctica at a very remote research station and experienced that plus. But it is still pretty common in central Australia.
cheers

Okay. I'll bite. Can you tell us what a "Yachtie" is?
Is this a serious condition?
Did it require treatment at the hospital or just at the local tavern?
I'm thinking Rum was the cure?? ... or, perhaps the cause??Did it require treatment at the hospital or just at the local tavern?
