    Default "personal type ELT"?

FAR 91.207(a)(2) says... an approved personal type ELT or an approved automatic type ELT must be installed...

Can anyone tell me what an "approved personal type ELT" is?

The ACR, SPOT, RescueMe PLBs are all internationally and FCC approved. Are these examples of ELTs that one can use in an aircraft according to Part 91?

The key here is it has to be an ELT. Those others are PLBs and or tracker/messengers.

Some ELTs have the capability of being carried on your person and/or mounted in an aircraft.

    Here's a short video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PE4X2PcVhes

PS they are quite expensive. http://www.survivalproductsinc.com/T..._EBC406AP.html

    From $998.00 to $2128.00

Kitfox carries a good ELT for in the mid to high $500 range. It is the ACK E-04.

I bought that ELT from Kitfox. It is capable of connecting to an inexpensive GPS. I don't have it connected to a GPS though.

I do a lot of hiking and snowshoeing alone in the back country. I read a story about a hunter that broke his leg 10 miles from the nearest road in Idaho. It took him a week to crawl out.

That sold me on the PLB as a good compromise to go along with the 406 ELT in the plane. I keep it in my pocket when flying.
