I was set on using the PVC speed fairings that KF sells for simplicity and the look until a friend mentioned that the PVC is really heavy. Does anyone know how much an 8ft piece of that weighs and if it's heavier than the wood fairing?

I had some and measured. If I recall correctly they were approximately 3 lbs per strut for a total of 12 lbs overall.
I took the wood fairings for my model IV and drilled lightening holes down the length of them. Ended up with a bread bag full of cutouts that weighed e few pounds. The fairings are not a structural item so they can be lightened up that way .Covered them with fabric.

I just weighed 4 8' sections of the wood fairing. They are 5 pounds total. the PVC fairing installed on my kitfox added 12 pounds. I usually do anything possible to save weight on my kitfox and had the wood on hand but opted for the PVC anyway because of the ease to install them compared to the wood.
My kitfox is what a lot of todays builders would consider way under powered but even with the added weight of the PVC fairing the climb, cruise and glide all improved enough to make fairing worth the weight penalty.
