I believe that you do not need a whisky compass and have not for a while. You do need a magnometer (a device which determines direction based on the magnetic field of the earth) but the SkyView has on so you should be all set. I got my AW in 2010 with no whisky compass.

In the US there is a big difference in equipment required between standard airworthiness and experimental airworthiness. The EAA has a good chart to help define what is required for experimental day night or IFR located here
http://www.eaa.org/sportaviationmag/...quirements.pdf
Even when a magnetic direction indicator is required it does not say whiskey compass. Electronic sensors are OK.

I am going to be putting a Garmin GPS in my panel that has a compass display? I can't determine from your last response if that would satisfy the requirement. Would it satisfy the FAR on that?
The link to the EAA in your reply is out of date.
Thanks in advance.
I do not think so given a typical GPS "compass" shows track not heading. If it has a magnetometer in it then yes.

I have a D-10A with a magnetometer and a Garmin 660. The FAA Inspector asked for my compass and showed them what i had and he asked, what if you lose electrical power. I said both units have internal batteries for backup and he said ok and approved the installation.
