Question Threads in end of wing struts

I'm finding the threaded holes in the ends of the lift struts a bit sticky. One of the rod ends threaded in with my fingers, but the other three would need a wrench and it feels like it might harm the threads on the rod ends. Perhaps the heat of welding caused some deformation. Any thoughts on running a tap in there? Anybody else run into this??

    Steve,

Exactly...you have it figured out. Real common to run a tap so that you have clean threads to work with. Other applications where you need to apply a specific torque.......dirty or sticky threads prevent you from getting a correct torque reading. Threads should go fairly easily with fingers only.

    You're on the right track.

    Sincerely,

    Dave S

Taps have varying degrees of tolerances... While using a standard tap has been done but it is not ideal.. using a minimum of a H3 quality tap for the lift strut rod ends is best..

The H number is the number of half-thousandths the tap is oversize; there needs to be some clearance, or you couldn't screw the bolt in.

It generally depends on the thread size. On the smaller sizes an H2 works fine..
