Yup - finally got mine in today. - appreciate the reminder.

Being a person who was involved in (non-aviation) federal and state regulatory processes/rulemaking prior to my retirement, I can say that the most effective comments are those which:

    1) Don't look like a form letter

    2) Provide logical reasons and hard data to back up one's position(s)

    3) Demonstrate benefits to safety, health, etc

    4) Demonstrate economic impact/benefits to an industry

    Keep 'em coming folks,

    DS

I will support it but I think it's dumb. All they had to do was adjust the sport pilot weight, hp, and stall rules and you would have exactly the same thing.

Now I will have spend more money and time to get my PP and medical at least once. I'm not gaining any additional skills going from SP to rec pilot regulations. (I have endorsements for tower, speed, and tailwheel). Sorry, but the logical solution never wins out.

Before you bash me for abandoning the sport aircraft market, I will say they have had a few years of a protected market and now they will have to compete with all the planes this rule opens up to the daytime recreational pilot. What's wrong with that?

    Tim,

You're right of course, but I think that it was realized that changing the Sport Pilot rules in that manner would be a much tougher, if not impossible fight. This proposal has a better chance, I believe, of happening. A big factor is the added requirement for on-line education as part of medical self-certification. There is the belief that this will further improve safety.

Personally I think the best plan would be to 86 the third class medical for VFR operations completely. Even through light piston twins (non type rated ac).

Comment period will close after July 2nd so if you haven't added your thoughts please do so.

Use the links I gave or a link to this thread and email your non posting pilot friends for their comments too.

There have been over 10,000 comments made but there are over 600,000 licensed pilots elegible. We have made a good showing but lets be sure that the FAA folks have no possible question of how we feel on this subject.

    Thank you again for helping.

Due to overwhelming number of responses the FAA has extended the comment period to September 14, 2012. There have been over 14,000 comments made to date with the vast majority in support if the proposal.

If you haven't commented, please do so.
