Flying a HKS Kitfox III and a Champ
The VW engine block was run under a stress analysis by the University of Brazil and they changed the mold. Notice the enlarge front bearing holder on the half unit in the background. that is their half block compared to a normal VW block in the foreground.

The front bearing is replaced with a larger insert on the larger cc VW conversions from Revmaster,aerovee and GP when using the standard block, so this looks like a great idea. Also, I noticed the heads have much more finn area, that must be how they can run so much power though it (can I just buy the heads?).
Regarding this engine, this is what I got off the Sonerai site from a fellow Sonerai builder, I guess he saw it at Oshkosh:
I talked to these guys a bit about this motor. The ports on the top are exhaust ports, intake on the bottom. The cam is different than VW because the ports are moved, valves switched around. The studs are on a wider circle to allow a larger margin for the studs at the head and the case. All the parts that are reinforced on the standard case by welding or deep studding are cast stronger with this one. The crank nose and case bearing are larger for prop loads. No provision for an oil cooler on top, full flow style oiling only.
I wouldn't call this a conversion, but it is undeniably VW based.
This engine has not been run as of Airventure '11.
I really loved the heads. I asked if they would be available separately, he said no, only available complete. I think this is a mistake on their part. If they just sold castings to retailers it would have a better chance at success.
Part of the lure of the VW is the interchangeable parts. Once you go to such lengths to make it proprietary, I feel you have really not thought it out well, and you have left the VW do-it-yourself community behind. The VW community really doesn't take well to expensive packages, because that just makes a rebuilt Continental or Lycoming much more practical, as mentioned above.....
PS their name is MOTORAV, and they have a more standard conversion also. I haven't been able to find a website.....
The statement about welding is incorrect.

It is a recast block with all the high stress riser locations on the VW casting, that were identified through stress analysis were, corrected in the redesigned casting mold.
There are youtube vids of this engine in some low wing aircraft although I don't know when they were video captured.
Does anyone have the US sales location for this engine?
