Default Fuel Consumption: 0-200 vs 912s

    All

There is an ongoing debate about the fuel efficiency benefits of either of these powerplants on one of our UK flying forums. Avgas has hit the equivalent of $13 per gallon here in the UK and MoGas is $9 !!!!!

Please can anybody give me some reliable data on fuel consumption in the same airframe? ie I use 19 lph in my Mk 5 with a 912s. Is anyone out there using an 0-200 in a Mk 5 and if so, what is the consumption? A Mk 7 comparison would be fine too - as long as they are comparable airframes. Thinking about it, a Mk 7 0-200 fuel burn could be compared to mine as there is little difference in airframe.

    Thanks in advance

Having used O-200s for many years--as a practical matter, 75% power at low altitude yields 6 gallons (22 liters) per hour. That is real life experience with at least a dozen different engines, some low time some mid time and some high time.

Hey; can't you run mogas in a O-200?

I was thinking the compression ratio was low enough to handle it, at least on cooler days.

I owned a varieze with an O200 and ran mogas, always figured the burn at 6gph same as I do for the 912S.

Yes there is a STC to burn Mogas in the 0-200 (if its in a certified aircraft) otherwise you can burn mogas if it has 87 or more octane. And in my experience 6 US Gal per hour is right.

What RPM is he running the 912S at when flying with you? My 6 gph is assuming I run full out at 5400-5500. The fuel burn gets a lot lower if I slow down

I have been using mogas in C-85, O-200s and O-320s since 1980. It is great from a maintenance point of view, no lead deposits in the plugs, on the exhaust valve stems, top of the pistons, in the combustion chambers or in the oil. The engines run as usual. Some people are using mogas premium in O-360s. It is great stuff.

Here's my results during phase 1 flight tests with my KFSS O-200, C150 prop, no wheel fairings nor strut fairings:

9 GPH during climb and takeoff
    6.5 GPH at 90 KIAS
    5.5 GPH at 80 KIAS
    4.5 GPH at 70 KIAS
    3.5 GPH at 60 KIAS

I am using 100LL only because fuel without ethanol is hard to find in TX.

There are a lot of people moving away from Lyconosaurus powered machines to lighter aircraft powered by more frugal engines. The sad thing is, the cost of fuel for us is only going one way, and fast. Even heating oil for our properties is just under $5 per gallon!

Does anyone know specific fuel consumption for the Rotax 912S? Low compression Lycomings and Continentals are approximately .45 lb/hp/hr.
