Default oil cooler mounting setups, what do you have?

Hi , I searched the forum for this and came up with very little. I need to move my oil cooler back or to a different location ,it is contacting the cowl in its current location. I would like pictures of what you have for a bracket and mounting setup. Thanks Kevin

that looks to be a series 5 smooth cowl fwf?? if so, the cooler is supposed to mount right below the gearbox in front of the oil pump. very easy install if you have the brackets, if not i'm sure john @ kitfox can fix you up. i can take a picture in a day or two if you really need one.

Thanks for the reply, It is a series 5 smooth cowl. I bought a smaller oil cooler and am making mounting brackets to mount it in front of the oil pump under the gear box . the irony is the person who mounted the large 13" long cooler in the picture used the brackets that would be used in mounting the smaller cooler up front . Of course he cut some of them off and modified the bracket! I am going to put an oil thermostat in the line as well, while the oil and suction line is drained.

I see some people using shutters on the oil cooler and others use a thermostat in the system. Which is preferable?

Hi, This original post is a year old ,I had just bought this plane. I have learned a few things since then. for the oil cooler on my 912 ULS . I think I really only need it at certain times like on climb or on hot days when the temps are 30 deg Celcius + . I installed a thermostat in the oil line and now also am going to put shutters on the oil cooler. We get - 25 degrees Celsius here so when its cold the cooler would be blocked off completely. The shutters give the option to open to cool , say in fall or spring or in a long climb. the oil thermostat I have lets a small amount of oil by into the cooler even when the thermostat is closed, so there is cooling of the oil and when its real cold the oil will never heat up. So I would answer your question with both , but it depends on your climate and what your particular engine setup, cowling requires.

I bought brackets from Lowell @ Highwing LLC (he's a team member http://www.teamkitfox.com/Forums/member.php?u=618 )... or you can check his site @ http://highwingllc.com/products.html .... they were not listed on his product page, but he had jigs already made..... and the brackets fit perfectly. I've got a Model IV, but I've seen similar brackets used on Model Vs. I tried to buy the brackets from Kitfox... they didn't have any for none current models.

You can see pictures of these brackets here (both my install as well as a Model V)

Hi , thanks for the reply.

The original post question was back in OCT 2010.

I have since made oil cooler brackets and have install a thermostat in the oil suction line. the original post question answered and new oil cooler install accomplished.

I have purchased an oil cooler shutter system from Lowell Fit ( haven't got it mounted yet, tape for now) .

I also recently ( last week) put in an inline thermostat for the coolant from Lowell and Mark, all in efforts to keep the engine warm when cruising at - 20 degrees Celcius. I have some testing to do, winter will be the real test. right now temps are around or slightly above freezing.

    Hi Ackselle,

I didn't notice until now that you are in MB, no need to tell you how cold it gets !
Last winter I only flew a little. I had allot of support issues to work out, like snow removal on runway , wheel ski setup the list goes on. This winter should be better. ( I had just purchased the plane Sept 2010 from the US )
I hope to fly to the Shoal Lake MB flyin next year, once I have have everything running how I like . I am North of Regina, on N side of Quappelle Valley
