SS7 O-200 Whirlwind
I got the email yesterday and as well. So apparently the Echo is having a hard time with getting info from the encoder. At least that is what I am reading.....
Anyone using the Tailbeacon X? I think I remember a video where someone mounted it in the tail?
Sounds like adding the Echo Alt encoder will be the easiest and cheapest route.
Sure Bruce. I was unaware also, til a buddy who's on the Van's forum saw it. Supposedly a cheap, easy fix, eventually, hopefully. Although I've seen no problem, after checking flightaware post flights.

Thanks Ken. I can't tell if this applies to my GRT Echo uAvionics unit - I'll contact them tomorrow and check.

Ken et all, I heard back for uAvionix almost instantaneously (they make some vendors look not so good, huh?):
You will need to install the ALT to your echoUAT. It is a very simple installation. The unit is very small and light...about the size of a matchbook. You DO NOT need to connect to your static system, just let it run open. You unplug the connector from the echo, plug it in to the ALT unit then plug the ALT back into the echo...No wiring, just daisy chain it in. You the update the echo software so it knows to look for the ALT for altitude information.

Thanks Darrel. I guess it's just a matter of them producing the units and sending them out.

If it is not connected to the static system it seems that there could be a difference between the altitude that the UAvionix encoder outputs and that of the transponder.

I received my echoAlt device in the mail today. I knew from the pictures they sent me a long time ago that it had a static port hookup, and I expected a wire or two.
Well that's not what was in the package. In the box there was a card with a QR code thingy. That takes you to a page where you can read the service bulletin, but it mostly refers to software updates and makes no mention of the harness and does not contain any wiring diagrams.

Anyone else in this same boat?
So far I'm not entertained at the potential for rework.

I haven't received mine yet, but it should be very simple, Alex. You can mount the new unit right on top of the ECHO. Just leave the static port open to the cockpit. I received this info via email awhile back -
