    Default rotax service instruction

Hi guys, I have in my hand a service instruction for rotax 912, 914 that is about purging of the oil system - apparently air may get trapped in the valve tappets and can lead to engine failure.
Is anyone familiar with this - and does it affect engines after the SI date of 2007?
    thanks everyone!

Yes, it sure does apply to all 912 engines. Follow the instructions exactly on a new start-up, or if you ever open up the oil system for service (oil changes done properly do not apply).

another question: the SI says that " the measures must be taken and confirmed by... Rotax airworthyness rep, rotax service center, or persons approved by the respective Aviation Authority"

So, it sounds like you did it yourself, as a builder are we considered "approved"?

If you are the builder of an E/AB aircraft you are eligible to apply for the Repairman's Certificate for THAT aircraft, which then allows you to do all repair and service procedures and sign them off. The simple answer is: I don't know of anyone who has ever gotten in trouble for doing an oil purge. The Rotax manuals say many things which sound mandatory, but in most cases are only factory recommendations for us E/AB people. Rotax does build certified engines and the rules are different for those.

ANYBODY can do all of the maintenance on an EAB except for the annual condition inspection. That is the only thing the repairman certificate grants you. https://www.eaa.org/eaa/aircraft-bui...er-maintenance

well thanks again Jim - it's kind of tough trying to figure out a lot of this stuff so I am grateful to this online forum - it's been a lifesaver!
