    Doug, Wish I could be more help, but all I can tell you about those balsa fairings is that they are preshaped balsa wood that are meant to be covered over with fabric or fibreglass. Kitfox sells them still I believe, but you could probably pretty easily make your own if you chose. Avid used to use a lightweight wood on the back of their round tube struts, as well as for their float rigging. I used that on my Avid and then glassed them. When done they were beautifully smooth, and looked great. And funny part was, they were still lighter than the plastic fairings I have on my Model IV kitfox.
