Windshield installation

My old builders manual stops cold at the section where you mount the windshield at the door posts, nothing as to how to attach to the butt ribs on top. Along the top side, where it fastens to the butt ribs, it seems like a good idea to use some sort of chafe tape between the rib and the acrylic.

Has anybody done this, and have a suggestion what sort of tape to use ? Would need to be very thin, I was thinking about something like gaffer's tape.

The manual also has nothing as to how to fasten the acrylic along said ribs, seems like SS SMS with nylon washers may be the best choice.

Suggestions ?

The factory sent one inch wide, black, foam tape. It is pretty thin but not extremely thin like anti chafe would be. The hardware I have is small counter sink screws with a small washer and nut.

What windshield are you putting on the airplane. The original type - Polycarbonate, or the formed Acrylic. A world of difference between the two.

I prefer the polycarbonate due to the fact that it is basically unbreakable and does not crack easily when drilled. You can bend polycarbonate (lexan) to a tight 90 and it will hold its shape without breaking, try that with acrylic and it will shatter almost like glass. Downside about the lexan is that it scratches easier...

Polycarbonate also stains much easier if you drip fuel on it. I would definitely go with the acrylic, just be careful when installing; hundreds of us have done it, actually thousands.

Like Jim said, fuel attacks polycarbonate... it'll not only stain it, but also cause crazing. Very tough and easier to work with but much more easily scratched.
