This may already have been asked but my search did not come up with anything so here it is:

I am looking for my radio and came across a good deal on this radio (ICOM A220) but, I see that it only has 8 watt output. I didn't find any recent reviews of this radio. Everything I've seen is for the A210. Does anyone out there have experience with this radio and would you feel comfortable flying into congested/controlled airspace?

Thanx in advance.

I have an a210, piece of junk. I heard the 220 wasn't very far behind. do yourself a favor and get a garmin GTR-200. I'm going to replace the Icom when the weather gets better with the garmin. yes I have an xcom for my double, using that one right now.

The GTR-200 was my first choice but, a friend has one in his RV7 as the primary and he likes it so he added one to his RV10 as a backup. But, he's just one opinion. I'd like to get a broader base of opinions. Thanks for your feedback.

a bunch of us got a210 on a group buy, this is in my rv7, and most of them are regretting it today. multiple problems. mine went out all of the sudden, lights up but doesn't work. first turn it on and it will work for about a minute. all that I have heard about the garmin is very good.

I have a GTR200 with a built in 2 place intercom. Been using it for over a year and a half with no problems and very good range.

So what's with the ICOM A210 and 220?

I have been flying with the old IC A200 for 10 years (purchased new) with no complaints.

Never had an issue with my IC-A210. Going on 10 years now.

I have an A210 with built in intercom. Once I got it adjusted properly it works just fine. 7 or 8 years now.
cheers

there is a big discussion on VAF. sometimes you can google the radio and get it. the 210 has a ribbon that goofs and many times blows out the radio. I tried replacing my ribbon and it didn't fix it. my ribbon had a bad spot on one end on the connections. might have been it. this radio will quit with no warning. there have been people on vaf that got stranded out of town. not good. just saying. :(
