View Full Version : Upgrading my 500-5 Cleveland wheels to 850-6

I currently have 500-5 Cleveland wheels part #40-78B on my KF Model 4 and they're just not very big. I'd like to get a pair of 850-6 on it. (I think this is a good size for the KF 4?)

I have Grov gear, Cleveland brakes.

The question I have is how do I know if a wheel assembly will fit on my axel's?

Will a 850-6 Cleveland wheel fit right on?

My plan would be to trade or buy a new set of Cleveland 850-6 and sell my old ones.

Thoughts or ideas on this?

Just make sure you check the weights on the new 8.50's you are planning to buy. I originally started with 6 ply treaded 8.50's years ago and found after flying with them , that they were treacherous on pavement due to their 15 lb weight. took a lot to get them to spin up on landing due to the inertia required and you are along for Mr. Toad's wild ride until both of them get spun up. I now have the smooth Desser 8.50's and at only 10 lbs per tire they are a great tire and handle grass or hard surfaces equally well. Bruce N199CL

Bruce,

Those were the tires I was planning on going with. https://www.desser.com/pc_combined_results.asp?pc_id=D3ECF29F85FC419CB238 79D8A011A8B0&search_keyword=&opts=SHOP+BY+SIZE%2FPLY+RATING~opt1%3D850-6%7Copt2%3DTIRE%7Copt3%3D4%3B&faceted_search_terms=SHOP+BY+SIZE%2FPLY+RATING~A02 1D99708934C898EF626FA804CEC54

They also make a 21" 800-6 that comes in at like 7lbs.

Obviously you want to find a wheel with the same axle diameter and depth. Then you would need to know if the brake disc/torque plate/caliper will match up.

It might be best to give Grove a call and see if they can answer this for you. They should be able to let you know if it can just be done with the wheel hubs or if you need new axles too.

Worst case (and the most $) would be to replace everything including the axle.

Interesting so the axle dimensions are defined by grov?

No, you need to know the axle dimension and bolt pattern of what is installed. Most likely you will need to replace everything except the axle to upgrade to 6" wheels.

Yea i've been doing some research and I think i'm going to use my old 8" wheels that came with the KF and get some 21" on them. Then I'll see what to do about selling the old 5" wheels and getting new ones

No, Grove doesn't set the standard. But if you know what wheel you have, they can provide the correct axel to use. That is of course, if you have Grove spring gear.

Is there any reason people go with Grove wheels over Matco? Is it just cause all the new KF come with Grove?

Looks like I can fit either the Grove 6x6 or Matco 6x6 on my current axles.
