What is the life expectancy of a well maintained Rotax 912 UL?

The Rotax 912UL in my Kitfox 3, which was certified in 1992, has 760 hours on it. The date of Manufacture for my 912 is December 1990. Still going strong.

I just sold a 912UL that was built in 92, it was running strong after 10 years of sitting in a garage on the plane I flew home. the electrical system gave me fits and I finally bought a new engine but the old one had 710 hours on it and I put almost all of them on it. I think the core of the engine will easily go to 2000 hrs and likely longer. The guy who bought it will fix the electrical problem and fly it for years. I just didn't want to be the electrical guy, I'm not that smart.

I have a 93,912 with over1300hrs.The core is untouched, doesn't even need oil between changes.Unfortunatly someone in our regulatory body has had a brainfart and is pushing for strict adherence to the recommended calendar and overhaul times.A storm I brewing!

There is unsubstantiated stories of 912's in Australia with 4000+ hours. There has been a lot of research and data gathering by our overseeing organisation (RAANZ).These engines are extremely reliable well beyond design Limits.

Thanks guys, I appreciate your inputs. I don't know much about Rotax engines, so I'm trying to increase my knowledge base.

Thanks again.

So, I guess my next question would be, how much is a used Rotax 912 UL going for?

Prices vary dramatically. It all depends on where you are looking and what you are looking for. I've seen very good engines sell for as little as $4500 in the last couple years. I've also seen people asking $10k for junk.

That's pretty much what I was thinking. Thanks.

4000 has to be trainers. That's some serious hours to put on a plane even if you have an old 1990's
