I am tentatively planning to fly my Kitfox to Oshkosh this year from Portland, OR to KOSH. I would very much appreciate suggestions of what others have done as far as fuel stops, overnight stops, fun (maybe grass) fields, etc. I have a maximum of about 3 hours or so bladder between stops, and would probably limit a day's flying to 6 or so hours. Scenery and sightseeing would be nice, but mostly want to get there and back in 2-3 days at most. Of interest would be a more northern route and an alternative somewhat more southern route. Thanks in advance.

If I can get my hours flown off in time I’ll be flying too. If it works out maybe it would be fun to meet up for the trip! Maybe in Montana or something?

I am considering making the trip too. Can you let me know your tentative travel dates and plans?

Our flight of six flew to Osh from the west coast in 2004. As noted, the flight began in Cameron Park where I live and proceeded over northern Nevada to Afton, Wyoming. From there your flight path and ours would be similar. Its been a while, but wanted to share our route and some data. I decided to scan the flight log I used which gives a little additional info.

Also, I took video of most of the trip and the videos can be viewed on YouTube:

I have seen all your videos Lowell. Some of those legs out in the flat lands would seem to be very lonely places if you were not flying as a flight. I wouldn't ask but I have been curious who it is that was flying down low between the east and west bound lanes of the highway. :D

My bad. Worrying about the link to the videos, I forgot to paste the images of the flight log. Here they are.

I recently had a conversation with a Kitfox buddy that wondered about our discipline on our flights - or lack thereof as he perceived it. Though we were not ridged on our formation positioning, we always knew where each of us would be. Ken flew low. I remember once hearing him exclaim as he was following one of the "boring" flatland dirt roads, "Wow! Did you guys see that snake?" M. and H. flew a bit higher but not much unless there was smooth water. They were the water skiers. Then it was me - the video guy recording all the fun. then L. and W. our speed check guy flew up and above the rest as he was the one behind the 582. The discipline? Self imposed. We always let W set the pace - no pedal to the metal and always in visual contact.

Well, those videos are inspiring. A few of us are nearing completion so maybe we will all be motivated to do some of that kind of stuff as well. Looks like a blast. I figure, the longer we own these things, we won't be as motivated to organize like that.

Haven't gotten too much feedback on my request:

I’ve been contemplating going this year but my route is far to the south of yours ie. Southern AZ.
Last time I went, I had a faster Glastar taildragger and ended up parking with the GA crowds. I’m very interested in landing and parking at the ultralight field if I take the Kitfox this year.

Is camping allowed with your plane in the ultralight field?

Jim,

I would have replied to you right away, as a few weeks ago my plan was to fly the Kitfox to OSH for sure, but life got in the way again and it’s highly unlikely that I’ll have the airplane ready and out of Phase 1 by then. One way or the other I may get there, but I’m not sure.
