My Rotax 912ULS is a 2005 model. I was thinking about getting a new Sky-Tec starter just to have a more powerful starter on the engine. I did install a big bore kit on the engine last year.

Nothing wrong with my existing starter, but I thought surely since it was
built in 2005 it probably did not have the more powerful starter.

I pulled off the cowl this afternoon and the color on the case of my starter is a faded gold color. Definitely not black. There is a red Rotax sticker on the starter. No numbers are visible.

Talked to the gentleman who I purchased the plane from and he told me that the engine came from Rotax and was totally factory stock and that he had made no changes to it.

So, now I'm not sure which starter I have. Don't know enough about the history of Rotax engines to know if they built a higher power starter in 2005.

Any help would be appreciated. Don't want to order and change out a Rotax starter for the Sky-Tec unless I'm sure the Sky-Tec is definitely the more powereful unit.

Thanks
Rodney

Rodney,

I bought my ULS about the same time as the engine you are talking about; and, it has the high torque starter.

Here are a couple photos of the engine - starter view - if that helps.

Thanks Dave - that is exactly the same starter I have.

So does anyone know if the Sky-Tec is more "powerful" or
are the two starters considered comparable?

This forum is so great.

Thanks for the help
