View Full Version : Removing propeller flange bolts

I put it together but I am having trouble taking it apart!

I'm installing an alternator which requires taking the propeller off the 912 gearbox drive flange. The 5/16" bolts are too long to come out of the flange and 2" spacer. I believe I'm going to have to somehow pull the spacer off the drive lugs which may be press fit into the spacer.

If anyone knows the procedure, I'd sure appreciate it. I couldn't find written guidance on this. It's kind of 'in between' engine and propeller stuff.

Is there a position you can rotate it too to get one bolt out at a time? If so you may be able to wiggle to prop extension off. You could also try lightly tapping the side of the extension with a soft hammer to wiggle it off. Or, if you get it a little loose you could use a plastic wedge as a chisel between the prop flange and extension (a tool could easily be made for a piece of plexiglass).

Phil,
I tried tapping the spacer. The problem is, those lugs are press fit into the spacer. When I mated the spacer and prop hub to the flange, the flange holes were large enough to get the bolts in past the gearbox case with the lugs still loose. There is no position that allows the bolts to go through those lugs :(

Thanks, Doug

I figured out a way to pull it off the drive lugs:

On the face of the spacer (prop side), there are (3) tapped holes. By inserting (3) 5/16"-24NF x 3" thread length bolts, you can push against the front of the drive flange.

Hope this helps anybody scratching their heads like me. (:
