Has anyone placarded the baggage compartment to show 100lb max capacity? It seems the FAA wants mine placarded and I'm trying to see if others have done this. If so, what did you do? I was thinking about making a placard and screwing it to a sub-plate through the canvas of the baggage compartment. Optimally old prefer to have it embroidered into the canvas, but I don't think I can get that done before my inspection.

Thanks

Hey Mike,

I placarded the baggage bay to include two statements....."<weight>" and "Only within Aircraft Weight and Balance Limits". Placard is stuck on the back panel (which is thin plywood on my custom baggage bay) towards the top so a person looking from the front seat can easily see it.

I do not have the factory bag; but, a custom made baggage bay which is extended.

IMHO - I am pretty sure that placarding the baggage bay, if the information is already in the POH, would be subject to variability in field assessment by FAA staff and DARs......but it is good to keep everyone happy - putting it there before inspection certainly enhances the builders credibility with the medium higher powers that be. :)

My SLSA has a placard.

How is it attached? Do you have a picture? Thanks!

Remember to allow for turbulence induced weight spikes of baggage compartment contents when considering max placard weights.

My model 4 has an oversized custom compartment. I tested it to 220 pounds actual weight to see if any deflection downward toward control assembly. None was observed at 220 pounds so I placarded it for 65 lbs. which is roughly 3 times less than the tested weight. This allows for 3G induced loading of the compartment contents.

I'll be heading back to the airport a little later, I'll get a picture then.

I didn't placard mine and had no questions about it from the DAR.

So , I clarified what the inspector wanted. He said he wanted my awareness of max capacity, it documented in the W&B and POH, but that I did not need to add a placard.

If you remove the Baggage Compartment back the sign is hanging from some brackets, and is not removed when the bag is removed for the Annual Inspection of the flight controls.

I see Ms. Button's Political sign in the Background.
