My 2 into 1 HKS exhaust with tractor muffler was getting rusty. I substituted 2 piccolo tubes - same rate of climb, no noticeable change in noise, much easier maintenance, and 9 lb less weight. It makes the exhaust come out as a series of tiny barks instead of a few big ones. Holes face to the sides and aft, have a total area larger than the cross sectional area of the pipe. Finisned it with old fashioned black wood/coal stove polish.

Keep an eye on this,I would be wary of a failure near the flange!

My 912 model I has dual exhaust. I installed 2 Volkswagen mufflers for weight savings. In the photo they look like exhaust pipes, but they are actually two Volkswagen mufflers siting side by side.

How did you pipe those Steve... a simple 2 into 1 on each side? Can you make any kind of comparison noise-level wise to the Rotax muffler?

By the way, that's a beautiful picture!

Yes, I'll keep an eye on that, may add a brace. I have seen similar systems that worked fine. Thanks for the thought.

John,
Dan Denny did a left side 2 to 1 and a right side 2 to 1 before I got the plane. They are held in place with the old half a link of chain welded on with a spring holding them. I've never had a Rotax muffler but have tried several other mufflers (all too heavy in my opinion). I would consider my plane fairly loud.

Micro,
The ones I have aren't chrome, but I really like that look. Maybe, just maybe, I'll check with the local muffler guy and see if I can get some. I would then look "cool" and perhaps throw a set of baby moons on the wheels!!!
(By the way, I already have a round gear shift ball on my flap handle, and a hula girl on the dash, but no dice)

Be careful, SkySteve, this could lead to a horrible, horrible redneck-ey end…
