Grove Gear Roll Pins

Hello Everyone
Im fixing to press my roll pins into the for points on the Aluminum Grove gear.
The holes are only 1" deep and the Roll Pins are 2" long. I take it that the Roll pins are designed to stick out of the gear 1"? Im curious why, if you care to divulge as well.

They keep gear from moving in the mounting blocks on a hard landing or if you put too much side load on the system. They should tap in fairly easily with a little ball peen hammer.
