View Full Version : Get by with a smaller gun for Stewart Ekofill?

Do any of you have good working experience with Stewart Systems Ekofill?
I know they recommend at least 13 CFM for good results on the top coat.
I am hoping to utilize my 5.5 CFM compressor for the Ekofill portion. Which of course would necessitate a smaller gun.
For the Ekofill, can this be done with a smaller gun (as it gets sanded anyway between coats)?

I don't think that will work. For a high fill primer filler you should use a 1.5mm tip, 30-35psi at the compressor and 20psi at the gun (that's continuous while the trigger is pulled). Also should use a moisture trap and for high fill, remove any filter in the gun (or between the paint pot and the gun). Also Stewarts recommends brushing the 1st of the 3 coats to get it into the fabric weave.
Good Luck

Forgot to mention - you need sufficient pressure and the right tip get good atomization of the paint otherwise the sprayed result will be horrendous and cost you a lot more time, effort and money to correct, than a good gun and adequate compressor will. It needs to be HVLP - Sata makes the best. Try Craigslist or borrow, rent one - it will pay off in the long run.

I used to own an Axis Citation HVLP system, and have used a bunch of
different compressor based spray guns, AND ... On a whim I bought an
around $100 Wagner from HomeDepot ... Guess what it sprays perfectly
well ...

Your mileage may vary ... However if you do your thinning right, and practice
it should work just fine.

Actually for me its a compressor issue not a gun issue. Sure would be nice if a spraying system like the Wagner shown would fly. Anyone ever tried to use one of these?

Be aware: Ekofill is not supposed to be thinned - it will not properly fill the weave.

Good feedback. Here is another one that has had some success in the automotive hobbiest world.
