View Full Version : How about some new Kitfox screen saver pics?

Winter is dragging on and on here in central Wisconsin, so in an effort to get inspired for spring it would be cool if we could all share some of our favorite Kitfox pics. Then we can all pick and choose some new stuff for our screensavers. My old screensaver pics are getting a bit old, so I was thinking how nice it would be to have some new stuff to look at until the nice weather gets here (assuming that ever happens...).

So what do you say, can you guys share some of your favorite pics with the rest of us?

I'll get us started by sharing one of my favorites from home I call "My Kitfox Paradise".

A yellow Kitfox on floats. What's not to love. Thanks Paul.:):):):)

I just saw a text from my niece showing the weather in central Wisc. :(
Winter just won't die up there.

Here's one I like with no snow anywhere near.

Thanks for the new pics. Keep it up gang!

Yeah, our weather here just won't stop. 12 inches of fresh snow in Northern Wisconsin last night - roads essentially impassable. Argh...

Hey, who can tell me how to submit the full size pics? I put mine up twice trying to make it bigger (like the ones just posted) and it wouldn't make it any larger.

Av8rps,
I use Photobucket. Upload your pics there, then click on the photo you want. You get several options to link. Click on the IMG link and it will automatically be copied, then paste the link in your TeamKitfox post. Walla, the picture shows in your post.

Okay, I fat-fingered something on my last entry; the first photo was courtesy of DesertFox4, snapped at a local DF fly-in, while the second one with the smoke system blowing was by John McBean taken at the same fly-in. Not to be outdone in the aerial photography department, the shot below, used as my avatar, was snapped by Debra McBean enroute to "Highwing's" home airpark fly-in a number of years back. It's an "official" company photo, complete with Kitfox logo, and it IS my screensaver! (Thank you Debra!)

Lowell,
On your first plane it looks like you had a torpedo type storage on your strut. Tells us about it please. Thanks.

That's a camera mount. His new one is pretty cool too. It's cable controlled with a Joystick and MFD in the cockpit for viewing what you're filming. I saw it a while back while in Sacramento doing some "work". I think he should produce and market it. C'mon Lowell, what do you say...Will Highwing, LLC start making these available to the general population?

I had to laugh. As I type this, I am on my third rebuild of the current version. The first one (on the first airplane) worked great. I had camera stability to about 75% of maximum zoom. It would tilt to about 20° above level to down about 45°. Pan was close to 180°

This time I tried using Nylaflo tubing and hydraulic cylinders to control the camera pan and tilt. not enough stability with low pressure fluid. I then ran cable through the Nulaflo and not much better. Right now it is all apart and I found that the ball bearing races I was using all have a little play in them and I get some pretty significant camera shake from engine vibration. I am going back to Delrin sleeve bearings and will know in a week or so if they will work. It has been high expectations followed by disappointment. The hydraulic idea was prompted by a desire to move the camera around on the airplane. Straight line runs of control cables eliminates that possibility. But then an idea popped into my head. We'll see about that one.

Produce for public? I seriously doubt it. Way too complex and would be way too expensive. I sort of understand why the ones on the News helicopters are in the half million $$ range. I have tried almost everything at least once and would be happy to tell what i know if anyone would like to try one themselves. The first one was made of aluminum riveted together. This one is welded 4130. A lathe is a must in either case, though.

As I reassemble this one, I will take some pictures and post them for curiosities sake.

I know we are not supposed to post links to commercial sites, but maybe I can be forgiven for dropping a link to some videos I took with the first system. The last of the Oshkosh videos was edited and posted the day before I destroyed the airplane in the emergency landing - ten minutes into a flight to the Factory Fly-in (2007).

I know a good camera mount and controls can be tough. I own part of a UAS (drone) company and we have spent several thousands of dollars and a lot of time developing good camera platforms. We actually now use a separate auto pilot system to control the cameras.

Heck, I'm seeing pictures of MY OWN plane I've never seen before; DesertFox4 has evidently gone "one up" on the NSA, 'cuz he's apparently got photo documentation of every Kitfox on the planet!

You don't suppose he's cheating and using Google Earth to expand his collection do you? I found this photo when I Googled "Chandler Airport, Arizona"...spooky, isn't it?

Thanks for the pictures. Some of them bring back some very fond memories. An interesting note to some might be that in the third picture - in front of my house - the Green and White Rans S-7 was owned by Hal Stockman the developer of the Big Bore kits BigJohn is reporting on. Hal is now flying a two or three year old S-7. At the time, I believe Hal was flying behind a 912UL with one of the high compression piston kits. He had some adventures with that - once placing a helicoil after landing on a dry lake bed after a head bolt tore out of the block. He was the McGiver that jury rigged some braking when one of the linings on my left brake cracked and fell out on our way to Thunder Ridge last year. It was at Shoshone, CA check Google Earth if you want to see desolate and unforgiving.
