Hi, All
I am looking for info on the difference between a std mod IV and a mod IV-1200. The mod IV that I picked up last fall has a data plate that says that its empty wt is 606 and its gross wt is 1200lbs. it was finished and signed off by the FAA in 1994. S/N 1621 N8072Q. Is there a quick way that I can tell? I have been in contact with a couple of prospective buyers that told me that it is not a 1200.
Thanks

Easiest way to tell (IMO) is what type of hinges it has on the rudder.

The 1050 has standard hinges and the 1200 used the "rod end bearing" style hinges.

Serial number tells all.
1621 is indeed a model IV 1050 not a 1200.

that is correct , the rudder hinges are probably the easiest way to tell . my model IV 1050 sn 1563 was delivered as a kit in 1991 and has the short vertical, small rudder and 4 pin hinges . although in my builders log there is extensive description of mods that were made to increase the gross weight to 1200 . I have never found any info as to where these mods came from or who endorsed them . from a conversation with Debra it appears the cross fuselage structure where the bungees attach are not as strong on the III/IV 1050 as on the IV 1200. the debatable point is if the grove gear will provide the same strength as the structure of the IV 1200 . I have somewhere seen where these mods were ment for aircraft that were to be used on floats and mine was clearly intended to be put on floats as I have that skag thing that float planes use .
