Were there any other cowls on the 4's besides the radial style?

:)

The bottom scoop was added by me. Otherwise it's pretty much as when it came from Kitfox. I ordered it last year from Kitfox directly. Appears to have the same thrust line as the radial/round cowl.

I dig radials, but not flat fours with radial cowls. So you can get the "normal cowl" from KF? I like that scoop and paint scheme!

Yes, page 29 of the online parts catalog.

Per Deb at Kitfox, the round cowl engine mount (Rotax 912)will not work with the "smooth" cowl. It is a totally different firewall forward setup.

I was considering the change on my project IV until I learned that. :(

That's a bummer. So how much or is the thrust line changing by the new FW to make it work?

Forgot to mention before that the firewall shape is different. So, yes, if you have an existing radial cowling it will be some work to change to smooth, but if you're starting from scratch it's not a big deal. However, it appears to me that on both cowlings the thrust line of the 912 coincides with the main cowling joggle joints, which seem to be the same to me for the smooth and radial cowling. Just saying it's not an impossible feat, but it may not be worth the hassle as well.

The shape of and the oil tank location on the two cowls are completely different making the need for different engine mounts.

10-4, gotcha, so it's not really a thrust line issue, but an accessory setup issue.

Makes sense...
