Time for Engine & FW

I am about ready to start installing my FW kit (smooth cowl) and the Rotax 912S engine on my SS7. I plan to go by the book with no modifications. I did order these options: cabin heater, NACA ducts w/cabin vents (2), oil cooler thermostat, remote oil sender.

Does anyone have an estimate as to how many hours it will take to install all this? Aircraft will already be fully covered and painted.

Hi Jim,

I don't think it is possible to give a real close estimate of time; as "mileage may vary" for each of us; however, in my opinion, installing the engine & related systems (series 7/Rotax also) I thought was pretty straight forward and I didn't feel it took all that long. Fitting the cowl and boot cowl is a little artsy and a person has to be patient with the spinner hub/prop/fiberglass trimming, etc. The basic Rotax electrical stuff, oil system, fuel system and exhaust should go together quickly. I did quite a few modifications so I don't think we could compare time directly. Just a ball park; but, I'd say the engine and cowl installation probably took me about the same amount of time as covering the fuselage through the poly spray.

It sure is like pulling teeth to get anyone to comment on building time estimates. I know it varies a lot, but I still am interested in a few more rough estimates. The firewall forward stuff seems pretty straightforward, so it should be easier to estimate time than for other parts of the build.

Jim , all I can say with certainty is, until you finish installing your engine and FWF, you ain't going flying.
