This thread is started in the hopes that you will not only enjoy the pictures :D but that you will post some of your own for others to enjoy. Lets see what you see when you go for that Sunday afternoon joy ride and give your location.
Southern Alberta, Canada is where I fly. We have flat, hills, mountains, wind, snow, heat, cold, rivers and the freedom to fly. Enjoy

Tom,
Do you fly the river/canyon to get to Yakima? Is that the best way?

The canyon, known as the Ellensburg Canyon if you live in Yakima or the Yakima Canyon if you live in Ellensburg,;) is the direct route between the two towns. I don't fly down in the canyon but stay above the ridge tops on the west side of the canyon. The right hand side in this picture looking south from Ellensburg.

Yea, that's it. If I remember right, the east side is Umpanim (?) and is restricted (?) due to a minitary area, maybe even a MOA? The old mind just can't quite remember.

Yea, I thought I was all alone, kinda like being on the moon. However, after I took off and had climbed to about 800 ft AGL, a Mooney flew right to left UNDER me! You never know out there boys & girls, keep those eyes open and outside the cabin!

And I do want to come see your sandbox and fly that river!

The first pic is of rimrock with the airstrip at the far end of the right finger of water . the strip was in great shape except for the cow crap , by the time I got back home it was well dryed and difficult to get off the plane . A small price to pay for a place like that to fly into . After tieton I stopped in at Easton state and then range creek . Hats off to the state boys and Washington pilots assn , they have done a lot of work at ranger creek. Was one of those days when it's fun to fly the cascades

took a flight today over the big rocks. For some of you this is no big deal but for this praire boy there is just some fear when you look at those big rocks. It was a perfect flight, smooth as glass. Looked at a huge coal mine about the size of 3 mountain peaks. Also a huge Frankslide. happened about 100 years ago and buried a whole town. Went about a hour into the mountains and felt good about beating my unwarranted fear. Went over the rocks at 8500' on the way in and followed the pass on the way out at 4500' to 5500'. Hope you enjoy the photos.

Coming from the plains of Minnesota to Arizona I understand your "respect" for those large rock piles. I still ratchet up my attention level every time I fly through their neighborhoods.

Was up cruising and seen this biplane higher up and coming at me. Pored the coal to the old Kitfox and was up 1000 feet and made the 180 to catch him. Tuned the IVO inflight and caught him. He was a bit nervous and turn down and away when I got close; I thought I was in a dog fight for a secound. So I kept my distance and moved in slower till I got this picture. :D I love my Kitfox.

2013 came in with a cold front here in Phoenix. Well cold for us. 35 degrees New Years morning. Yes I know some would love that as their high temp for the day but here it is chilly.
Arrived at DVT about 9:30 hoping the sun would do its duty and warm the hangar and contents enough to facilitate an easy start of my 912S. I seem to have the coldest blooded Rotax on the North American continent. Much below 50 degrees and it objects to internal combustion but then so does its owner.

Don't laugh. I preheated my engine with a heat gun. Even a 5 degree temperature increase of high priced Austrian aluminum makes the difference between go or go back home. I did the longest, most thorough pre-flight I could manage while my little four-stroke contraption warmed its cockles by a whopping 10 degrees. There was hope of meeting Dan B and his wife Wendy at Falcon Field by 11 am yet. A plan had come together the night before to fly to Marana,AZ (AVQ) for breakfast/lunch.

Dan would take his lovely and very patient bride on her very first flight in their new family Kitfox.

It was a great way to start the New Year. The flight was fun, the day beautiful, the meal was good and the company, stellar. Only regret was my wife was too under the weather to make the flight with us. It is the cold and flu season. :( I promised her we'd all fly to Sedona but only when it warms up a little.

Now, random photos of our day. Hope yours was memorable too.

Nice early afternoon flight to Payson,AZ. Dan B. dropped into Deer Valley Airport and off we go as a two ship to late lunch at Payson. Usually don't go that direction this time of year but with temps tickling 80 degrees F. we figured we could chance a flight to higher elevations.
It was still shirt sleeve weather in Payson but there were traces of funny looking cold white stuff on the North side of the cafe. Payson is beautiful any time of year. We actually ate breakfast instead of lunch. First meal of the day for both of us so why not?
For those fellow Kitfoxers feeling the long days of a cold winter, here are a few photos of a place somewhat milder in climate. :)

Deer Valley to Indian Hills Airpark.
4331
I took the day off to visit with folks down from Minnesota and Iowa.
Met up with Kevin and Tim at Indian Hills. Weather was perfect. No wind, painfully blue skies, temps in the 70's. Had to see Kevin's model 6 with the 7 firewall forward. Beautiful Kitfox inside and out. I recognized it right away as having been originally on amphib floats with a 914 turbo. Now sporting a more mild but quite capable 912S with conventional gear. Great set up for his private grass strip back in Northern Iowa. Congrats. Kevin.

43394333
Tim & Barb from Blue Earth, MN, own a beautiful place on Indian Hills Airpark. Tim not long ago completed a gorgeous Super Cub. We decided that lunch would happen about 40 miles west at Quartsite,AZ. Off we go as a 3 ship for food and site seeing. Got some nice air to air photos. We were met at the little airstrip by a local name of Rocky. Rocky drove us to the good cafe 3 miles down the road and later gave us a tour of what can only be described as the largest privately owned collection of interesting automobiles in the US. There were no kidding, thousands of cars and trucks scattered in various yards and various states of repair or disrepair. What a great day. Airplanes, food and some of the most collectable of all Americana on wheels I've ever seen. Thanks Rocky.
43414334

Back to Indian Hills for some hangar talk and fresh brownies and lemonade. Thanks Barb.
Indian Hills is one of those rare places where aviation is practiced in a most relaxing and enjoyable way. If there is a formula for fun flying it is proven here and should be duplicated as much as possible. I always feel at home and hate to leave. Yes, I know the secret. It's the people. It always is. Airplanes are everywhere and so are runways.
4336
43374344
Dave Kennedy lives a couple open hangar doors down from Tim and Barb and spent the day Kitfoxing with Kevin. He owns a PA-12 SuperCruiser that looks like factory new and a spectacular hangar/home where he is working on a Murphy Rebel. Lots of building going on here. Great to meet and fly with Dave. Oh, and after his first flight in a Kitfox, we may have a new convert.;)

43384343
Well guys. Hope you're not sick of the photos. Wish you all could have sat in the hangar with us, soaking up the Arizona sun for an afternoon. I hope you can feel the warmth from the photos.

This is a tight little lake called Power Lake in NE Washington up in the mountains by 49 degrees North, ski resort.

I think this year's weather has not been as good as past winters, but I have still had a bunch of good days. I have put 20 hours on skis so far this winter.

Well I suppose I will post pics of where I fly as well. Went to a ski flyin today, Had to be at least 25 plane, one helicopter, and one trike. One Kitfox 5 and my MK IV Avid Flyer were representatives of our type of planes. About 3' of ice on the lakes so the lakes make great runways other than deep snow and drifts in places. Well a good time was had by all, and I have another 2.6 hrs on the Avid. I should have taken pics a bit later when all the planes were there, but didn't. Last pic is just another few lakes close to home with lots of people ice fishing. Take care, Jim Chuk

No not Warroad, it was on Long Lake, about 25 miles NW of Duluth. A guy with a PA 12 has a lake home there, and every winter he puts on a ski flyin and spagetti feed. Always a good time, although a couple of years ago, I got caught in heavy snow on the way home. Followed a highway at about 500' but made it back okey. Sure was nice weather for the flying, funny how inacurate weather forcasts can be. The local aviation forcast said it was supposed to be 500' ceilings and 1 mile visability yesterday AM, it was even still showing that at 7:30 AM when if you checked local conditions, it was clear and visability 10miles pluss. Good weather today, so ofcourse I had to fly somemore. Take care, Jim Chuk

Got a call last night from Papa. We're flying to Marana for breakfast. Flight of 3. Be in Chandler before 8am. Yes sir. I'll be there. Can a I bring a newbe?
Certainly can.
I picked up my guitar playing buddy Ron at 6:50 and made DVT by 7am. Preflight done, refueled, $114.00 ouch! Called Papa and told him we should be there by 8. Bill P. had his gorgeous new 7 Super Sport pulled out and Papa's pretty as brand new 7 SS was sitting along side. Launched from Chandler as a 3 ship and turned South for Marana (AVQ). Not a bump to be found and zero wind.
Ron had only been up a time or two in a single engine Cessna and it was some years ago. Take off really surprised him in regards to how little runway was needed even with two good sized guys and full fuel. I did warn him about that. After leaving Chandler he got some good stick time and quickly caught on to how little input it took to make the Kitfox change direction. We closed up the formation to take a few air to air photos.
4676 4677

4678 4679

4680

40 minutes later we land Marana. Great food and conversation about airplanes, music and family.

4681 4682
Coming back Papa and Bill split off West of Cassa Grande for Chandler and Ron and I headed North up through Wild Horse Pass then on into DVT. Lots of traffic to deal with but we got a straight in for 7 Left. I told Ron we'd be keeping the speed up for all the twins working the pattern. We did. 122 mph on 1 mile final. We were passing twins on final for 7 Right. No body had to wait for the slow little Kitfox in the pattern. Got it slowed down enough to get the mains to stick and we were off on the 2nd exit. I think the Tower likes Kitfoxs a little more each time they handle us. We hold no one up on take off or landing.
Well it was a picture perfect morning and it's always fun to fly with the DFS. Ron got introduced to one of the most exciting and fun ways to see Arizona , or any other place for that matter and I still had him home by noon.:)

Keep building guys. It's worth every minute, every hour, day and month you put into reaching your dream. The payoff is huge.:D:D:D

Great area to fly. How often are the Breakfast Fly Ins? Happen often?Well Chris, to be honest they don't happen near as often as they should or have in years past but folks are so busy that you just have to make the time. That's what we all did today. We'll work on making it happen more often because it's just so danged much fun.

We need to drag Dan B. away from the shower door business for a weekend too. ;)

I had the opportunity to fly the plane to Show Low last weekend to attend a week-long welding workshop for school. Saturday morning I flew from Show Low to Rock Art Ranch (Google it) that is just South of Joseph City and landed on a dirt road leading into the ranch. Kelly Baird, a friend from Utah was down to the ranch to help his Dad Brantley on this one of a kind dude ranch. Every year (June / July) they host a group of archeology students from several universities around the country. They are there to work ancient indian digs as they map the past. There is a museum of many artifacts (Complete pottery vessels, arrowheads, tools, the list goes on). His dad gives tours of the ranch almost daily and I was able to join them yesterday morning...fascinating! Afterwards, Kelly took me to a good place to hunt arrowheads. We didn't find any after 3 hours of looking...but we did find some nice pottery chards. Was a good time. I flew home this morning passing Winslow on my right direct to Payson then on to Falcon Field. Had a nice tailwind most of the way and made it in about an hour. Beautiful scenery! GoPro video below.

I had a chance to pull up some YouTube videos on the ranch. Interesting and old history concentrated in that canyon.

Hope the week long welding seminar went well. Maybe with your new found skills we may see you someday turning out SS-7 fuselages at Kitfox Aircraft under the tutelage of the "great one". After you retire from teaching of course. Idaho is a nice place to live/fly you know.

Steve, That ranch is amazing. Only problem is it's still hot during the summer. We will have to go up maybe in the Fall and spend some time. I know Kelly's Dad well enough to know he would let us stay and run around the place for as long as we like. There are some great swimming holes in that part of Chevlon Canyon. I didn't make it to Copperstate this year :(, but I woke up Saturday morning to some beautiful weather, so I packed up the airplane & flew with 3 other friends (yes, I do have some friends) in that general direction. Leaving Denver, we crossed the Rockies, over Wolf Creek Pass, the Sangre de Cristos, circled around Shiprock, flew down Canyon de Chelly, then over to Monument Valley to have lunch at Goulding's Lodge. Then on to Bullfrog, and stayed the night at the Defiance House Lodge on Lake Powell (the poor lake's down 100' I was told). Flew back yesterday morning. One of these days before too long I'll be doing trips like that in my Kitfox - maybe taking a little longer & enjoying it even more!

I had a beautiful flight yesterday (Saturday) in and around the foothills of the Rockies, west of Denver. Perfect weather, blue skies & probably 100 miles visibility. Same blue skies this morning, but looking out my back door the trees were swinging and bending and the sky was populated with this... a very good sign that it's not a good day to go flying downwind, in or around the mountains. Those ragged ones, along with the beautiful lenticulars are talking to me loud & clear - "Don't even think about it". Weather moving in with a little snow tonight.

You know, it has been a bit chilly and snowy up here in the Midwest lately, so much so that there are not a lot of light aircraft out and around......did make it out yesterday as the OAT broke Zero F......The winter landscape has it's own beauty, enhanced by the comfort that the oil temp and CHT are holding at Summer temps (with a little help from miscellaneous things)....then, the thoughts of soft summer flights over the verdant carpet of fields and forests easily wash into a person's thoughts and I felt at least some need to share some photos of Kitfox Views and Sunsets.....and maybe a little need to think where this summer's Kitfox travels might take us......

A morning flight yesterday to the Columbia River above the Wanapum Dam. A couple weeks ago someone noticed a bulge in the Spillway. They inspected and found a 2 inch by 65 foot long crack in one of the pillars. The water level was lowered 26 feet and the crack closed up. Now they are doing more inspecting and trying to figure out how to fix it.

Construction started in 1959 and finished and water backed up in 1964. This is the first time in 50 years much of the shore line has been exposed. The officials have closed the entire shore line between Wanapum and Rock Island dams to protect archaeology sites. And for safety. At least one person sank in the mud up to their waste and had to be rescued.

As a kid I spent quite a bit of time along the shore of the river there so was quite interested in seeing what I could see. Kitfox is a fantastic observation and photo platform.

For reference here is a 1954 aerial photo of the old vantage town site and bridge. The dam was built just off the bottom of the picture.

Turned back down stream now. This town was not there last time I went by this spot about 1959 in my Uncle's boat. I didn't know it existed and is not on any highway maps or other maps I can find. On google maps it just says Wanapum.

actually after the water goes away it takes some time for it to dry up. one year I landed on it and threw mud all over the plane. looked like I took it mudden. I was afraid to get out of the plane. so I took back off. this time it looked pretty good, I was able to get out of the plane. the tail wheel went down in the dirt about 3 inches. not to bad.

I estimated the roll out about 150ft. I three pointed and the tail wheel in the dirt helped stop. On take off I raised the tail right away and lifted off about 50ft from where I hit the throttle. you can't see it but the sides drop off all around at least 15 ft. right where I stopped it drops down 5 to 10ft on a safe gradual. I've rolled over that in the past. just a fun spot to land. you end up coming in just off the water with 200 ft sides on the right and on the left about 500 it's pretty narrow. come around the corner and there it is. fun. definitely a kitfox landing spot.

There must be some box to tick off when posting videos on YouTube to include a mobile device version? When I try with iPad it says "The content owner has not made this video available on mobile. Add to playlist to watch it later on PC."

DF4, Yes sir. My very own, at home airstrip. We just put in a pressurized irrigation system so old ditches have been filled in, a cross fence removed and trees trimmed back. If our weather holds (several days of wind and rain are coming) I am planning on the first landing tomorrow morning! Wish me luck. The wing cam will be rolling.

It has been two months since I had my kitfox up. Yesterday I drained the old gas out and got the ambition to take a lap around the valley.

Farmers have started putting up Barn Quilts. This custom started in Ohio I think. The quilts are supposed to have something to do with the history of the ranch or its owners. This one is called "Eight Pointed Star".

Flying the Oregon coast is really a pretty safe proposition since a major portion of the coastline is wide sandy beaches. I fly within gliding distance of the beach and feel quite safe most of the time.

I got tired of the flatlands of Texas a decided to do some Mountain Flying. I flew up to Idaho and meet up with Paul Leadabrand to get some Tail Dragger training. Paul is undoubtedly one of the best instructors I have ever had the pleasure to train with. If you just want to improve your skills, get a tail Dragger sign off, or to get your BFR. I would highly recommend Paul at Stick and Rudder. Here is a photo of me with Paul's plane in the Back Country of Idaho. I love the color of his planes! I've got a few more photos I'll upload when I get back home. There were two more SLSA at Boise, one getting ready to got to Alaska, and one to the East Coast.

I'm contemplating taking 703KA up to the factory, and get John to convert it to a Conventional Gear set up, and possibly a couple more mods.

Phil , just wondering . is the kodiak the plane they refer to as the baby caravan ? or maybe it's one of the South American planes . I think I've seen some of the planes that they were flying inter island hawaii referred to as baby caravans .
you are a really tall guy or the people are pretty small in that part of the world .
I've seen a few of the susi air videos of some of the places over there , would be fun except for the weather , until it became work . Idaho should be a walk in the park after flying over there
take care

Chuck,

I don't know if people refer to the Kodiak as a baby Caravan, but I have had several mistake it for a Caravan. Both are great planes!

The people in this village are pretty short. I'm only 5' 11".

Most of the days flying in Papua were pretty enjoyable, but there were always the days when the weather was really bad. For the first years I flew there we only flew VFR, basically it was all like being in class G airspace (visual and keep out of the clouds). Then we started flying IFR with approved GPSs. That made the flying so much less stressful.

jiott

No joke! That's why they named the airport "Fairways". Its not a complete bowl of cherries however, one approach is over a housing development; the other is over a huge system of power lines as you can see in the photos. Not very friendly to an engine failure on takeoff.

I did practice some "impossible" 180 degree turns today at altitude of course and found the Kitfox capable of completing the maneuver in just a little over 300' of altitude loss. Of course that is not a safe working number considering the surprise factor, obstacles, etc. Nevertheless, it is an impressive airplane.

scott , was wondering , since your so close , if you had one of the wa airport guides ? they do come in handy , have the closure dates of the state strips . which appear unreasonable for some of them . it is possible for a person to receive a personal call from the guy that runs wa state air if that person might be observed using one of the strips during the time they are supposed to be closed . we have a few extra guides laying around the hangar if you need one , or state air would be happy to give you one . they give them out at the aviation expo every spring . I don't think they've had a new revision in a few years . let me know and I'll send one down or stop up and pick it up

TJ,
Wenatchee is my hometown and would love to go to a fly-in there. For now, I'm too far away and the schedule doesn't permit, but thanks for posting those pics. Only flew out of there 1 time in High School while taking an Aero/WX class, in a 172...first flight ever in a small plane. Hope all went well and the folks at Pangborne (KEAT) were friendly...would hate for my people to give you a bad taste while you're a guest. :D

t j

Pilot4Life,
It was my first time flying into Pangborn. Everyone at the fly in was great. Lots of locals were interested in the Kitfox...I think it was the only one there.

There was a lot of traffic arriving at the same time. No tower so I landed short and got off at the first exit. All the other planes were getting off a lot further down the runway. By the time I had taxied to the parking area there was an official waiting for me and walked me to a parking spot.

Direct from Ellensburg would take me over Mission ridge which is 6600 feet and then I would have lose a lot of altitude in a hurry to get down to pattern level. I elected to go over Colockum Pass to the south east a few miles from Mission Ridge at 4600 feet then up the river to Wenatchee.

My little 503 (52 HP) did great but I wasn't sure how it would do when I came back to Ellensburg in the afternoon heat. I put in 5 gallons of extra fuel in case I had to come around vantage to get home. I had no problem getting back up to 6000 feet before Colockum so didn't end up needing the extra fuel.

I've flown into EAT many times over the years. Use to be a great place to fly into, but now days with the loss of the FBO and the airport board being money hungry. At least that is what it has been. I don't go over as much any more. But landing and getting off on the first taxi, I hope that is runway 12 that you are talking about. If not and you used 30, that is a long taxi to the EAA building, which is by the pumps. I don't think I have ever landed on 12, the winds are always in favor of 30. I like to do a short approach also but long land down to the taxi in front of the pumps and drop down and get off there. cuts the taxi time way down. I wish if it hasn't changed that someone would take over the old FBO there, really liked going in and staying the weekend and doing some river rafting, dinner, the works.

t j
06-26-2014, 08:32 AM
Slyfox, 7/25 has deteriorated and is closed UFN. Yes, 30 was the active and it was a long taxi to parking. I would have landed long but next in line behind me was an Arrow so didn't want to fly down the runway at 40 mph and be the cause of him having to go around.

Slyfox
06-26-2014, 08:40 AM
I say why not, it's your runway. of course you could have done one of my shorts and cut mid field and than land and off also. I wouldn't have done that long taxi is all. I sure miss the way EAT use to be. A well missed airfield. in the old days they had two vehicles, a Taurus and a ranger. I use to go over there all the time grab a vehicle and go eat. the ol' days. way back in about 05 they had their last mountain flying seminar, it was fantastic. they had flyouts that you could rent a Cessna with instructor and go into their tracks in the mountain. overhead they had a safety plane that was in touch with everybody and directed traffic. the best course I ever went through. way cool. it's all gone.
