Good morning Jean-François, to your question yes there is a locking device on the flaperons handdle, at full flaps 20° for experimental and 15° for S-LSA if I am not mistakeking, for the middle range I am not sure, if some body can fill the blanks it could be enriching.....:o

For the way it works, I fond this little video, look at 4 min to 4.30 min and I will let Dan Johnson & Paul Leadabrand comment on it.

jean-francois,

On your Model IV from the factory, no. The flap handle is held by friction only. At the handle pivot, there are large round washer like disks welded in. The idea is to put similar sized leather disks and tighten until there is enough friction to hold the flaps in the desired location. It works pretty well, but will require tightening from time to time.

That's a nice idea and I was planning something similar on Smitty's plane. The down side is you will need to have a trim tab or some other type of trim system other than the flapperons to use this type of setup. Using the flapperons for trim would require an infinite adjustment.

I eventually settled on something much simpler.

I made my own detent style similar to the drawing already posted. Works great. Detents were'nt yet notched out in this pic. Wood knob on top was bought at a craft store and is relieved to fit over the flap handle with enough clearance to depress the spring. Small allen head bolt sticks out side of dowel and flap handle to engage detents. Bracket is 2 inch alum angle radiused to match and adele clamped to frame.

I took the easy way out and bought the new one that KitFox Aircraft now has available. Handle is spring loaded into the detents. Really easy to install with a couple of hose clamps.
