I'm fitting the fiberglass fairing to the rear of the fuse. Question I have is you can see in the photo, while the fairing is sitting loosely, how far it overlaps the wood rib. Do it trim the rib so the fairing fits flush or do I trim the fairing to match the cut out in the rib?

Jorge,

I trimmed mine so that the flat spot in the center of the fairing touched the square vertical stab post and glued it in place like that. As I remember, doing this required that a small amount on the side of the ribs be trimmed so the fairing sat flush against the ribs. I don't remember trimming any of the back edge of the ribs to get the fairing to contact the vertical stab post.

Hey Darin. The flat part fairing touches the vertical part of the fuse. It's just that because that small cutout on the rib is shorter than the fairing, it causes the fairing to splay out and create a gap between the the faing and the rib

I trimed the rib so that the fairing wouldn't be splayed out. Just used a dremel with sander head. I will take some pictures of how it came out tomorrow and post them.
Be sure make the fairing as tight as possible to the trailing edge of the fues because the leading edge fairing of the rudder takes up more room in there then you may think.

Hey guys,
Great photos, more people need to start posting their progress also. Brings up another question. I was planning on smearing Hysol all the way down the vertical end of the fuse. You say to make sure the fiberglass sits flat, would this cause enough seperation to later interfere with the rudder and would it just be overkill to secure it with that much epoxy? And the aluminum angle under the rib that later the side cover attaches to, I'm assuming it butts up against the fairing and does not go under it?

Hey Jorge and Cindy, When I installed the vert fairing I made sure it fit against the tail post good and tight. Then any extra that didn't fit in the rib notches I notched a little more. Also applied Hysol the full length of the tail post ( the fairing is not coming off). Hope to post some pics soon.

I also smeared hysol (bondo as I call it) all the way down the rear of the feus. as well as all the places where the wooden ribs touch the fairing to avoid vibration and wear.
I actually remember the leading edge fairing of the rudder being a little tougher. It has to get all the way on and then trimed correctly so that the rudder attach points are accesable and the rudder can use from stop to stop. Feels good once it's done.

Jorge,

I marked the location of the side of the fairing on the ribs and filed them so the fairing sat flush. I Hysol'd the entire length of the tube and also on the end of each rib then filleted it with my finger. They Hysol on the tubing won't cause a problem with fit of the rudder...it is adjustable anyway and I had to readjust mine after fabric anyway to keep it from rubbing. I looked for some pics but couldn't find any of this area in my folder.

I took the plunge and like Nike says, "I just did it!". I used almost all the clamps I own and masking tape. Seems to have worked out just fine. Thanks for all your help.

I guess it is after the fact now but here is what the connection looks like on mine. As you can see I am not the neatest when working with the bondo.
