Just bought a kitfox iv this past week the price was right no matter which number it turns out to be. My question is it has a rotax 503 The kit is a 2001 year model have all the paper work from where he bought it new, How does it fly with a 503? or could it be another model, what the easiest way to tell which models they are. I did some research an found out that there was one called a iv xl not sure if its that one This kitfox is a basic kit nothing fancy or added weight. Just kinda courious of what to expect.

The Flaperons and flaperon hanger ribs are a definite clue it is a Model 1, 2, or 3. Do you have the serial number from the original kit from the factory?

Here's a direct link to the model 1.

It should fly just fine with the 503. Here's a take off in a Classic 4 with a 503 at 1000 pounds gross weight.

Your N number shows it is registered as a model 1,still a cool airplane and it will be a blast to fly.

looking at the landing gear ,..you might want to check the bungies ,..the tires look like they are splayed out at the bottom,.. the tires should be with the bottoms slightly in from the top,..or top tipping out about 2 degrees,..
the wing looks like a model 2 wing with the undercamber,..it doesn't look like a model 4,..unless the xl used the undercambered wing,..and it looks like it only has the one wing tank on the right side,..
what doesn;t look like a model 2, is my model 2 had the 5 gallon header tank with filler center cowl in front of the windshield and the 1 wing tank on the right side,
the tail doesn't have the ribs in the vertical or horizontal stab's ,..most model 2's didnt have that ,..some model 3's and 4's did,..more so with the 4's ,..still an option then,..
I had the bump cowl ,..not the smooth ,.so that might be my perception difference too

I fly a mod 1 and at the back of the seat the fuss is 36" wide.
The mod 3 I'm building is 39" wide.
The bungies tube should be flat with the bottom of the fuss.
This one appears to angle down as if needing bungie replacement.

if you look up the n number on the faa site , there isnt any information on when or if an airworthiness certificate has been issued . it should be a collectors item with a serial number like that . must have set around awhile before it was completed .
