I am helping a guy finish a Series V with the 912 ULS Series 7 firewall forward package. I am plumbing the oil lines and don't want to finish until I know whether an oil cooler is required. I know that in my Model IV iat was marginally needed, but essential at times. What bits of wisdom can you give me on this?

Mine is a model IV with the round cowl and a 912UL-80 hp.

I have never seen an oil temp over 240° on my plane that does not have an oil cooler. This is with an OAT up to ~90°, but that's probably cooler than you get there in CA.

Just for info, I am building a SS7 with the round cowl (will have 912ULS). Just ordered the oil coolers (two required) from Kitfox for my aircraft. Evidently they are required to keep things at proper temps.

I couldn't fly mine in Phoenix without one. No way. I see 245 degree oil temps at times with one here on a "warm" day.

This is the info I needed. I had one on my IV with Rotax and it was marginally necessary. I had the shutters on the cooler and seldom opened them, But this was the 80 hp. and logic would tell me that the "S" would generate a tad more heat.

Thanks,
