What caused this? (see attachment)
The plane was in storage for a few years, no doubt with auto gas still in the header tank. I won't claim it was an ethanol reaction.....but....??

That does seem to be most common with those burning auto fuel. Ethanol or maybe other additives that are in auto fuel is most likely the cause. That particular sensor is also very expensive to replace. We now have a capcitive type low fuel system available that goes in the header vent line.

PS.. update to the original post... The new fuel sensor could possibly utilize the existing electrical wiring.. I have not tried it... but it should be possible.
