    Default Lost 40 hr paperwork

Have a friend who recently purchased a Kitfox that had been registered and received an airworthiness inspection through a DAR (~ 10 years ago), however, it was never flown and the builder has unfortunately passed away. The family selling the bird cannot locate the 40 fly off paperwork authorizing Phase 1 that would have bee received from the inspector. What would typically happen in this case? Could the local FSDO recreate, or would there be a copy with the FAA somewhere?

The inspection paperwork created by the DAR should have been forwarded to the Oklahoma City FAA office; and, a person should be able to retrieve a copy of the limitations (which describe the fly off limitation and should include the designated testing area) issued by the DAR at the time of the inspection.

In any case, contacting the MIDO (Manufacturing inspection district Office usually co-located with FISDO) which covers your geographic area where the Kitfox was originally issued its airworthiness certificate should turn up a way to recover the papers needed; or, recreate what is needed.

do you have the Airworthiness certificate?

if yes :you can get a local DAR to download your OK city file,
we have access via EDRS. It ncosts $3.50 to get the file.

if no: you will need to get a DAR to issue you a Replacement certificate.

if you are moving the aircraft to a new area you need to get an Amended Certificate this will give you the Phase 1 at your airport.

if you ever need to go back in Phase 1 you can fly at your airport.

Yes, he does have the airworthiness certificate. So that sounds like a plus. I will forward the info.

Many thanks for all the feedback here.
