    Default Builders Insurance

    Hello everyone,

Who has experience in builders insurance? I just got my quote now that I have some expensive items to insure and it came out to a whopping $1125 a year for a not flying plane!

My car is less than that and I can potentially maim people for life with it.

    Any advice?

    Esser,

Although it is not current as I completed my build back in 2008, EAA/Falcon quoted me what worked out to 1% of stated value for non flying builder's insurance at the time. If your stated value is $112,500 that would be 1% but I can't see a kit being that much

Disregarding the builder's potential blood loss in the course of cutting/reaming, etc - they probably are not worried about anyone hurting someone with a box of parts.....more like loss due to theft/fire/tornado, etc.

    Sincerely,

I currently have builders insurance (ground not in motion) through EAA/Falcon and it is $390 on a value of $65,000.

John, that was more of what I was expecting. I declared a value of $75,000. For builders insurance, I would say that even 1% of hull is ridiculous. They are basically saying there is a 1 in a 100 chance your kit will be destroyed or stolen as there is no way a plane being built could cause more than 75,000 damage to something or someone.

Has anyone successfully included it in their house policy?

    Not likely Esser.

This topic has been covered here in these forums in much more detail but the short answer is no. The only reliable coverage would be a policy written for that risk, on that airframe, from an aircraft insurer.

I have Falcon for mine and it is on par with JohnB's coverage.
